Bought a new car? Facebook hai na! Liked that new hottie in office? Orkut hai na! Had a messy break-up? Twitter hai na! That’s the funda Gen i is living by, blogging, tweeting and posting details about their life 24x7 on social networking sites. Saurabh Arora is forever online on Facebook and says that there is no better way to tell the world how ‘happening’ you are than by declaring it on a social networking site.
Antra, an executive in the social sector, finds it easy to keep in touch with her friends and family. She says, “With unconventional work hours, there is never enough time to do things. My friends earlier cribbed that I don’t stay in touch, that I don’t say the timely hello and that I don’t do enough to keep in touch. But now I just log on to these websites from office or home and drop in a line to my friends. No one asks me ‘Are you alive’ anymore, as I continuously keep updating my status – whether I am happy, sad, hungry, angry, whatever!”
These sites, in fact, have become a lifestyle addiction for many. Rohan Arora*, an active user of popular social networking sites says, “If I post something and don’t see my friends reacting to it, I feel let down.”
The same perhaps goes for celebs, who have taken to Twitter with a vengeance. Everyone from
Priyanka Chopra to
Abhishek Bachchan, Shahid Kapoor,
Karan Johar and Gul Panag are using the micro-blogging site to keep fans informed about their daily life, even to the tune of tweeting about them going to the gym.
Some also find these social networking sites liberating, giving them the option of admitting their sexual preferences. Shamit Mehrotra*
recently announced on a social networking site that he was single again and looking forward to befriending men who might be interested in him. “Men are you listening?” read his status the morning after his break-up was sealed.
The year also saw the birth of a new trend – online break ups. Says Nandita Arora*, who dumped her boyfriend on Facebook, “I just changed my status from ‘In a relationship’ to ‘Single’ and updated my Facebook status too saying that I saw my boyfriend cheat on me. It saved me the hassle of explaining the complications to all my friends and served Hemant a lesson, because of all the public humiliation.”
Recently, a networking site meant for mothers announced that it will telecast childbirth online, thus helping aspiring moms-to-be to become comfortable with the process! Anything and everything in the name of virtual reality?
